Dental braces: how to take care of them

Taking care of your braces is important to maintain your oral health and avoid any damage to your braces. Here are some tips to help you care for your braces:

Avoid hard, chewy, and sticky foods that can break or get stuck in your braces. Some examples are hard candies, nuts, ice, caramel, gum, and popcorn.

Brush your teeth and braces after every meal and before bed. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to gently clean around the brackets and wires. You can also use an interdental brush to reach the areas between the teeth and braces.

Floss your teeth at least once a day using a floss threader or a water flosser. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the wires.

Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to remove any remaining debris and freshen your breath.

Visit your orthodontist regularly for check-ups and adjustments. Your orthodontist will monitor your progress and make any necessary changes to your braces. Follow their instructions and advice on how to wear and care for your braces.

Wear a mouthguard if you play sports or do any activities that could injure your mouth. A mouthguard can protect your teeth and braces from impact and prevent cuts and sores on your lips and cheeks.
